On farm research is well established in organic farming. The holistic approach considers the complexity of a farm and the findings will be implemented immediately. As the experiments are often performed on single farms the results are difficult to transfer to others. Controlled experiments on group level with representative samples investigate single factors and lead to reliable and well-founded results. However, they are often far away from implementation. Applied research requires interplay of on farm research and controlled experiments. A series of ethological research work should show how this interplay may take place. |

1. This study examined whether a free range with roofed boxes with sand to structure the hen run had an effect on the numbers of hens going outside and on the distribution of the hens in the hen run. 2. On a poultry farm with 8 flocks of laying hens of roughly 500 birds per flock, each flock was observed with and without roofed boxes with sand. 3. There was no difference in the number of hens on free range with and without roofed boxes but there was an influence on the distribution. 4. In free range with structures there was a higher percentage of the hens outside in the furthest quarter where the structures were located. 5. We conclude that structures in the free range have an effect on the distribution of laying hens. |

In order to test the effect of organic vs. conventional diets on fertility traits, we conducted an on-farm study with female rabbits. Eight groups of seven to eight female rabbits kept in systems with litter were fed ad libitum with either organic or conventional pellets. Offspring was weaned with approx. 28 days. In the first series analysed, the conception rate was higher in the conventional groups. Diet type had no significant influence on that trait. Nevertheless, a significant influence of diet on litter size was found: organically fed female rabbits produced more offspring per litter. The organic groups also showed higher rates of weaned animals, despite of a slightly higher mortality of offspring in these groups, but differences for both... |

Imitated natural light conditions during the artificial incubation may influence pullets' behaviour in being adapted to the diurnal rhythm. To study these effects, eggs were set in a commercial incubator either in the dark control or under full spectrum light tubes (Philips TL95, 36 watt). To imitate the light changes by a clucking hen, the eggs were exposed to light for twelve hours a day with a light-intensity of 20 lux. After six hours there was a step-up in light intensity to 1000 lux for 20 minutes. After hatching, the chickens were reared in paired groups under BIO SUISSE organic standards. Each group, containing 1000 pullets, was observed at the age of 2, 4, 8 and 10 weeks in 5 trials. Several categories of behaviour, activity and the diurnal rhythm... |

Introduction Organic egg farmers mainly rely on the same hybrids, breeding techniques and production schemes as conventional egg producers. This includes annual replacement of the laying hens. However, from an ethical point of view a longer life for laying hens is desired, not only because the hens can be used for a longer period but also less male chicks would have to be killed at one day of age. Birds have to moult their plumage from time to time. During this time they hardly take in any food and stop laying. This laying interval presents a recuperation period for the egg producing organs of the hen. After moulting, egg production is again higher and the egg quality is improved. In large flocks of laying hens moulting has to be induced to prevent social... |

A longer life for laying hens is desired from an ethical point of view. Not only because the hens can be used for a longer period but also less male chicks would have to be killed at the age of one day. In large flocks of laying hens moulting has to be induced to prevent social instability in the flock. In this study, a method was investigated, to moult laying hens without too much stress for the hens. The chosen method with daily access to a bad weather hen run had no detectable negative effect on the behaviour of the hens. The moulting succeeded in improving egg quality and plumage condition. |

In biodynamic and organic agriculture mostly the same strains of laying hens as in conventional agriculture are used. These strains require feed with a high nutrition level to tap the full potential of their genetic. When this feed is not available it may lead to health problems and ethological interferences as well as to a deficiency of performance. In this study, four potential adequate strains are evaluated and compared with a commercial strain using health and ethological parameters as well as characteristics of performance under biodynamic conditions. After one laying period the laying performance of Amberlik, Hyline, Sperber and Sussex was high but only the plumage condition of Sussex was acceptable. Therefore this strain will be used for further... |

In organic agriculture, hens are kept in free range systems. A free range is an enrichment for the hens and brings several advantages for them. Laying hens may show behavioural elements that are not possible in a poultry house. For instance, sunbathing behaviour is only shown in direct sunlight and not in artificial light (Huber, 1987). Hens spend 35.3-47.5% of their time with food searching (Fölsch and Vestergaard, 1981) and, in natural habitats, invertebrate food appears to be an importnat addition to the diet (Savory et al. 1978). Free range systems may also have an influence on animal health and product quality. Lopez-Bote et al. (1998) suggested that some constituents of grass might be of interest for the production of eggs rich in (n-3) fatty acids.... |
